Roulette is French for the wheel of the game that is used to determine the outcome. It is a wheel with a circumference comprised of small pockets that are each randomly numbered from 0-36 and colored either red or black. In European roulette, the zero is colored green, and in American Roulette, there is an additional green pocket numbered “00”. The game consists of a ‘croupier’ (similar to a dealer) spinning the wheel in one direction and throwing a small ball into the wheel in the other direction. As the wheel slows down, the ball eventually falls into one of the pockets. If it lands on the number and/or color you have bet on, you win, and if it doesn’t, you lose – it’s that simple!
Roulette - Game Rules
There isn’t much to playing Roulette other than knowing how to bet wisely. The following are general playing rules:
- Up to 8 players can participate in any Roulette game at a time, yet they aren’t ever in competition with each other – whoever guesses the ball’s pocket correctly wins regardless.
- The bets each player can make can be made on any color, number, or combination of numbers and colors desired, and they can be placed until the point at which the ball is dropped into the Roulette wheel.
- When a round is complete, the table is cleared and the croupier will announce the beginning of a new round of Roulette.
Since the player isn't required to do anything other than bet, there is high importance in knowing about the available bets on the table:
Inside Bets
- "Straight bet" – betting on a single number. Each of the wheel’s numbers are printed in 3 columns in the center of the board, and are bet on by placing a chip on top of the number.
- "Split bet" – a bet on two adjoining numbers on the board. This is done by placing the chip on the line separating them.
- "Street bet" – betting on 3 numbers positioned in a row horizontally in the center of the board, done by placing the chip at the beginning of the row.
- "Corner bet" – betting on 4 adjoining numbers on the board, and done by placing the chip at the center-point of all 4 numbers.
- "Six-line bet" – betting on 2 adjoining rows of numbers, known as “streets”.
Outside Bets
- "Even money bet" – any bet relating to half the pockets (such as all even, all odd, all red or all black pockets).
- "Group bet" – betting on the first, second or third dozen numbers
- "Column bet" – betting on one of the 3 columns of individual numbers in the center of the Roulette board.
Roulette - Course of the Game
Playing Roulette involves no more than 3 simple steps:
- Making your bet by clicking on the chip size you want and dragging it to the place on the board you wish to bet on.
- Pressing “spin” to start the game.
- Hearing the results - that’s it!
Roulette - Terminology
- "Croupier" – the person in charge of spinning the Roulette wheel, calling the results and taking bets.
- "Inside bet" – a bet made on the number grid section of the Roulette table.
- "Outside bet" – a bet made on the areas outside of the number grid.
Roulette - Variations
Roulette is available in both American and European versions, as explained above, yet the European is the most popular. You can play both variations at our online casino right now in both real money and free practice mode, so hurry in and make that bet before the croupier makes the next spin!
